Just WHAT, pray tell, is a pahau? (pronounced: Paw Who)
Actually the name is pahaukatawa (Paw-Who Ka TA' wa) "Tree standing in the distance" or Far Away Tree.
From the BIA given name to my Great Grand Father "Standingtree"
My Great Grandmother was Two Medicine Woman from the area in Montana of the same name.
The area called "Many Chiefs" or what is known as Kanai was where my Grandfather was born. His name was Red Elk.
My heritage is Blackfoot/Pikuni or pikani.
As a matter of respect and tradition, we do not capitalize our names out of respect towards others. So it is pahau NOT Pahau.
For you historians out there you may remember the fictional charicater Pahaookatawa.
Yancy Derringer was a gentleman adventurer, former Confederate Officer returned to New Orleans, Louisiana, after the Civil War.
Yancy owned a riverboat, the Sultana, carried a four barrel Derringer gun in his hat and a cane with a hidden sword.
NOT the belt buckle with a derringer as many believed.
Pahoo-Ka-Ta-Wah, was his silent Pawnee American Indian sidekick. Pa-hoo-Ka-Ta-Wah is Pawnee for "Wolf who stands in water."
Pahoo communicated only by sign language as he was born a mute. Although Pahoo was short on talk, he was long on action.
Beneath a blanket wrapped about his body, he carried a shotgun which he used in emergencies.
Most of the time however, he used a throwing knife sheathed in his headdress.
My family name is two medicine and hence the name of this site.
All my friends and family call me pi' or pi'pi' from the pikuni word pi'kssii' or bird as a nick name.
If you would like to drop me a line via email feel free to do so.
Thanks, in advance, for your support of my site and art work.
